James L. Austin - President

Mr. Austin brings over 25 years of experience in claim management to his position as President of Hinz Claim Management, Inc. Mr. Austin is a proven leader whose vast knowledge runs full spectrum, encompassing all areas of claim management.

Mr. Austin began his insurance career as an independent adjuster. He then joined St. Paul Fire & Marine as a claim adjuster. While at St. Paul Fire & Marine, Mr. Austin quickly rose through the ranks – from Claims Manager on to Corporate Claims Manager, and most recently, Regional Claim Manager. As Regional Claim Manager, Mr. Austin was responsible for the handling of large accounts across the Midwest. He has overseen many types of claims including, but not limited to; general liability, automobile, products liability, medical malpractice, and workers’ compensation.

Throughout his career, Mr. Austin has maintained a commitment to ethics, dedication, and quality. He brings a wealth of experience to HCM, with proven leadership to guide all parties down the right path. In his position as President of HCM, Mr. Austin seeks to combine his knowledge, experience, and initiative to best serve every client. He holds the CPCU designation.

Mr. Austin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University.

 

James Herring - Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing

Mr. Herring came to HCM with over 25 years industry experience, most recently with Gallagher Bassett Services.  Prior to this, Jim was employed with a number of insurance companies and brokerage firms.  HCM is a Third Party Administrator for workers’ compensation, property, liability, automobile, and medical malpractice claims.  Clients include self-insured private companies and pools, insurance companies, and public entities.

 

Martin H. Alpert - Vice President, Environmental Claims

Martin H. Alpert, J.D., CPCU, ARM, ARe, ASLI, CDP is the Vice President of Hinz Claim Management Inc., analyzing, monitoring & managing Asbestos, Pollution & Health Hazard Claims. He worked at Cambridge Integrated Services Group, now known as Xchanging, as a National Claim Director.

He was a Claim Director for GE Reinsurance, where he became Six Sigma Certified, resolving emerging industry issues in the U.S & abroad: asbestos, lead paint, pollution, accounting, energy, drug exposure, mass tort & construction. Mr. Alpert has over 27 years of experience in litigation, corporate governance, healthcare, ADR & the insurance & reinsurance industry. He is a member of ATLA, ITLA, IADC, DRI, ISBA, the CPCU Society (Co-Chair of its Diversity Committee), Chairperson for Cook & Dupage County Mandatory Arbitration program & was involved in the National Forum for Environmental & Toxic Tort Issues.

He was in the insurance defense practice of Pretzel & Stouffer, Chd., litigating hundreds of civil cases. He did similar trial work, arbitrations, and mediations with Arnstein & Lehr, from 1991-2000 and became an equity partner in 1998. Alpert started his own consulting practice in 2000 to near-end 2001, not long before starting with GE Reinsurance. Prior to GE, he was named to Who's Who Among Rising Young Americans, trained in Situational Claims Negotiation, Advanced Trial Advocacy, Persuasive Communication for Leaders, lectured for NBI & presented seminars & conferences on trial evidence & strategy & discovery procedures. Mr. Alpert received his Accounting B.A. from Villanova University with an emphasis in taxation & his JD from John Marshall Law School.

David Calandro - Senior Environmental Claims Specialist


Mr. Calandro has worked in the Casualty/Property Insurance industry for almost 30 years. After graduating from Illinois State University, he spent his first 6 years working as an investigator/legal assistant for several Illinois law firms that concentrated their practice in complex personal injury, civil litigation and class action suits. He spent his first two years with a plaintiff's firm and the next four years with a defense firm. He then worked as a Claim Representative for Kemper Insurance Companies in the Chicagoland area. For the next 17 years, Mr. Calandro held several positions with Kemper including: Claim Representative, Team Manager, Division Examiner and Associate Line Claim Manager. As a manager, he was responsible for the establishment of technical claim procedures and practices countrywide that managed billions in exposure.

Throughout his career, Mr. Calandro has acquired a full range of experience and knowledge in the casualty insurance business. He maintains a commitment to professionalism, thoroughness and a strong desire to deliver the best service possible to every client. His proven leadership style provides an excellent approach to claims handling techniques that enable the adjuster to achieve an effective Case Management Process & Resolution. In addition to earning his B.S. degree, Mr. Calandro holds the CPCU and AIC designations and has been a course instructor with the Insurance School of Chicago. He is a licensed independent adjuster in many states, including TX, CA, FL, OR and NY.

Mr. Calandro is currently a Senior Environmental Claims Analyst with Hinz Claim Management & has focused his extensive technical skills on a variety of Multi billion dollar environmental claims ranging from property pollution/Superfund Sites to Multi-District tort litigation caused by exposure to a variety of toxic materials. This includes coverage determination, exposure investigation, reinsurance, contribution/subrogation recovery and a strategic Case Management Process. Mr. Calandro believes in a "team" approach to handling environmental claims at Hinz Claim Management, Inc.

Stephen Saybolt - Senior Environmental Claims Specialist

Mr. Saybolt has nearly 30 years of experience in Investigations, Law, and Insurance. He began his insurance career working in a SIU unit conducting insurance fraud investigations. He has worked on high exposure environmental, product defect cases, biohazard issues, construction, professional liability, E&O, EPL, D&O (including the Enron and Williams Communications security class actions), and transportation matters. He has served as a back-up Risk Manager for Colonial Pipeline and received a Hazwhopper certification, gaining experience with environmental hazard response and complex claims management. He has worked on the carrier, broker, and TPA side of the business. He holds adjuster licenses in multiple states, including TX, NY and CA. He has taught insurance courses for 18 years (CPCU, ASLI and insurance law) and is active in several insurance and local business organizations.

Mr. Saybolt has participated in and/or conducted numerous Risk Management seminars for client hospitals and has experience in writing policies for office practices, claim handling, and certain technical manuals, such as creating and researching reports on a claims system. He has also worked closely with resources that ensure hospital and physician clients properly adhere to regulatory processes and reporting. He previously served as a Risk Management Consultant for Estill Inc., a medical products manufacturer & provided contract service as a part-time Risk Manager for a small hospital in SE Georgia. He has consultative experience with loss reduction/cost containment & high-level decision-making with millions in exposure.

Mr. Saybolt is responsible for the Hinz Claims Management's Atlanta Environmental/Specialty Claims office. This includes claim handling (environmental, professional liability and commercial trucking, account service and business development. He is also consulting with a local non-profit healthcare agency to organize an insurance co-op for uninsured, impoverished immigrants unable to afford dialysis treatment. He is an active member of the GA Association of Health Underwriters, and periodically consults with a local law firm, reviewing coverage decisions made under client healthcare policies.

Kevin Doyle - Claims Specialist

Mr. Doyle has worked in the Insurance industry since 1984, and for Hinz Claim Management, Inc. since 1997. Throughout his entire career of handling property, automobile and liability claims, Mr. Doyle has provided prompt, courteous service, in a professional and fair manner.

He began his insurance career with Farmers Insurance Group as an Auto Damage Adjuster. He then spent six years as a Master Claim Representative with Nationwide Insurance. His duties included resolving both personal lines claims as well as commercial claims. After a brief stint as a Property Claim Specialist with a large insurance brokerage in Chicago, Mr. Doyle joined the Hinz Claim Management team, where he is a Senior Property/Casualty Adjuster. He is responsible for handling commercial property, automobile and general liability claims.

Mr. Doyle received his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Northern Illinois University Business School, and holds the Associate in Claims (AIC) designation. He has completed extensive training classes and seminars in the areas of automobile estimating and repair techniques, property damage estimating, liability investigations, interpreting medical reports, and coverage application. He is committed to continuing his education in the insurance field in order to keep pace with the changing insurance environment.

Karen Pearson - Environmental Claims Technician

Karen Pearson is the Environmental Claims Technician for Hinz Claim Management, Inc. She has over 5 years of administrative and technical experience, 2 years of experience in the insurance industry and an extensive background perfecting Time Management and efficient organizational skills. Over the past year, she has earned INS certifications in Commercial, Property & Liability Insurance. Ms. Pearson earned her A.A. in Accounting and Business Administration from Harper College in Palatine, IL and her B.A. in Sociology from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Her daily responsibilities for Hinz Claim Management include managing a specialized claims system, collating millions of environmental documents with billions in exposure including claims involving asbestos, silicosis, lead, uranium, UST's and air, water, and property pollution. She also helps establish reserves and loss exposures and manages loss adjustment expenses. Ms. Pearson's courteous approach, dedication and work ethic are an important aspect for managing the extensive information accumulated in Environmental claims.
